JULIA MAYO TORNÉ.  President of El Caño Foundation

 

Julia Mayo holds a degree in Geography and History (1998) and a PhD in American Anthropology from the Complutense University of Madrid (2004). As a researcher, she directed the Coclé Archaeological Project from 2004 to 2007. She is currently director of the Archaeological Project El Caño since 2008. The results of the research directed and carried out in these projects by Dr. Mayo have been published in numerous proceedings of congresses and scientific journals.

 

Dr. Mayo is also founder and president of Fundación El Caño and director of the Centro de Investigaciones Arqueológicas del Istmo, both located in Ciudad del Saber. She is also a scientist associated with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and explorer of the National Geographic Society.  

 

 

 

 

CARLOS MAYO TORNÉ.  Secretary of the El Caño Foundation

 

Carlos Mayo holds a degree in Art History from the University of Santiago de Compostela and is a candidate for a doctorate in archaeology from this university. 

 

Since 2005 he has been a researcher at the Coclé Archaeological Project and since 2008 a researcher at the El Caño Archaeological Project, where he is in charge of the stylistic and typological studies of the ceramic component of the El Caño Funerary Complex. The results of these studies have been presented and published in various congresses and scientific journals. In addition, Carlos Mayo carries out and directs the conservation work and geological surveys carried out at the archaeological site of El Caño and bordering areas.  

 

 

 

 

 

MARIA EUGENIA BRENES TOVAR.  Treasurer of El Caño Foundation

 

María Eugenia Brenes has a degree in Law and Political Science. In 2000 she obtained a Master in Intellectual Property Law at the FRANKLIN PIERCE LAW CENTER. In 2012 she obtained a second master's degree in Taxation and Tax Management at the Universidad Especializada del Contador Público Autorizado, UNESCPA. 

 

María Eugenia has worked at MORGAN & MORGAN since 1995. She is also a member of: National Bar Association of Panama; International Trademark Association (INTA); American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA); Inter-American Association of Industrial Property (ASIPI); Panamanian Association of Industrial Property (APADEPI); of the Intellectual Property Commission of the Panama Bar Association and of the Panamanian Association of Business Executives (APEDE). 

 

 


MERCEDES GUINEA BUENO.  Member of the board of directors El Caño Foundation

 

Mercedes Guinea holds a PhD in Philosophy and Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid (1981) and has been a Professor at that University since 1984. Since then she has been teaching in the Department of History of America II (Anthropology of America), combining her teaching activities with research and field work. 

 

Dr. Guinea has participated in and directed numerous projects related to American archaeology and the application of New Information Technologies to this scientific field. On these subjects she has directed two doctoral theses and made numerous publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings. She is a member of the Coclé Project team, from 2004 to 2007, and of the El Caño Project since 2008, where she deals with issues related to iconography.

 

 

 

 

 

ALFREDO FERNANDEZ-VALMAYOR.  Member of the board of directors El Caño Foundation

 

Alfredo Fenández-Valmayor holds a PhD in Physics from the Complutense University of Madrid and is a professor in the Faculty of Computer Science at the Complutense University of Madrid from 1993 to 2010. Advisor to the Vice-rectorate for Innovation and the European Higher Education Area and Director of the Virtual Campus of this University from 2003 to 2010. 

 

Dr. Fernández-Valmayor's research and publications focus on the use of information technology to promote learning and the dissemination of knowledge. In this sense, apart from participating as a researcher in numerous projects, he has directed and coordinated three projects of the National Plan and directed 5 theses on topics related to these research topics. As a researcher of the El Caño Project, he directs the design, construction and maintenance of the database used in the project.

 

 

 

 

 

 

ALEXA HANCOCK.   Coordinator of the volunteer work and external relations of Fundación El Caño.

 

Alexa Hancock holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Florida State University (2010) specializing in Osteology and Zooarchaeology. She is a member of the Southeast Archaeological Conference and the Panhandale Archaeological Society of Tallahassee. She has participated in two projects in Florida, in the study of the archaeological fauna of the Garden Patch sites and in the winter camp known as Hernando de Soto. 

 

Since 2015, Alexa Hanconck participates in the research of the El Caño Project as an assistant in the analysis of biological anthropology under the supervision of Dr. Jesús Herrerín.
